Finding Balance: Juggling Work, Caregiving, and Household Management for Special Needs Families
Dec 11, 2024
Do you ever feel like you’re juggling a thousand things at once—work, caregiving, and household responsibilities—with no room to breathe? Finding balance can feel impossible, especially when raising children with special needs. You’re not alone in this struggle.
For about 10 years, I worked outside the home while parenting two children with special needs. I know what it feels like to constantly juggle work demands with the responsibilities of caregiving, all while trying to keep the household running. I vividly remember the constant pull—wanting to be home when I was at work, and thinking about work tasks when I was home. To be honest, I never quite found the perfect balance. As our children’s needs evolved and became more challenging, it made sense for me to transition to remote work full-time. But even then, the balancing act didn’t get any easier—it just looked different.
The Mental Load of Doing It All
Many parents in similar situations find it overwhelming to balance everything—schedules, appointments, work responsibilities, and daily household chores. The mental load of keeping it all organized can stretch you too thin, leaving little room for self-care.
I remember during my years working outside the home, Monday mornings always felt like a mad scramble. I somehow managed to get my kids’ clothes ready through a basic laundry system, but my own wardrobe was a complete mess. I’d often have one item clean but not the other, or I’d be unhappy with how I looked and felt in my clothes.
Like many parents, I didn't have the time or energy to do a full wardrobe overhaul. I looked into minimalist living, and while the idea of decluttering my closet was appealing, it just wasn’t practical with everything else I had on my plate. Parenting two children with special needs, working full time, and running a household meant my energy was already stretched thin. Overhauling my closet felt impossible.
That’s when I discovered the concept of creating a "uniform" wardrobe. At first, it felt strange. Having worked in the restaurant industry, where uniforms were required, the idea of a work uniform in an office job felt odd. But as I did more research, I realized it could simplify my mornings in a way that would reduce stress and free up valuable mental space.
Simplifying My Wardrobe: A System That Works
On a Saturday afternoon, I decided to tackle the problem. I rallied the boys with promises of pizza for dinner (my youngest added soda and ice cream to the deal—because of course he did!). With the kids entertained, I set a 25-minute timer and got to work.
I started by pulling clothes I thought might work onto my bed. I selected five pairs of pants, five tank tops for layering, and seven shirts or sweaters. Everything else went into the armoire, which I’d cleared earlier. Some items were donated—those “I’ll wear it when I lose X pounds” pieces or my beloved high school jeans. Anything I wasn’t ready to part with was folded into the armoire for later.
Each time the timer went off, I took a break. I’d guide my oldest through his bathroom routine, refill my youngest’s water, and then reset the timer to dive back into the project. By the end of the afternoon, my closet was simplified. I now had a small, functional wardrobe:
- Five pairs of pants
- Five layering tanks
- Seven shirts or sweaters
- A few pairs of shoes (though I kept my full collection of Toms shoes—it’s a situation!)
To keep things running smoothly, I committed to doing my own laundry every Saturday. I set a phone alarm to remind me to wash, switch, and hang the clothes. I quickly fell into a routine: Saturday laundry, rotating shirts and sweaters with different pants, and never looking back.
The Power of Autopilot Systems in Reducing Stress
Using autopilot systems like these helped me reclaim mental space. No one at work ever noticed (or cared) that I wore the same pieces week after week. The simplicity of my wardrobe lifted a huge mental load and made my mornings easier. I continued using this system when I transitioned to working from home. Even today, when I know we’re going through a challenging time—whether it’s a behavior slump or a hectic schedule—I reset my wardrobe system. I pull five to seven outfits for the week, hang them where I can easily grab them, and free up mental energy for more important tasks.
These kinds of autopilot systems make a huge difference in balancing the demands of parenting, caregiving, and household management. When you simplify one area of your life—whether it’s laundry, meal planning, or your wardrobe—you create more room to focus on the things that truly matter.
Practical Tips to Create Balance and Reduce Overwhelm
Here are some time-management strategies and practical tools that helped me find a better balance:
- Set Up Autopilot Systems: Automating routine tasks—like laundry schedules or meal planning—can help reduce the mental load. For example, committing to doing my laundry every Saturday kept my wardrobe system running smoothly without needing constant attention.
- Batch Tasks with Timers: Setting 25-minute timers helped me focus on one task at a time without getting overwhelmed. It’s easier to make progress when you break projects into smaller chunks.
- Simplify Where You Can: Creating a minimalist wardrobe may not be realistic for everyone, but simplifying small areas of your life—like your wardrobe, meal prep, or cleaning routine—can make a big difference. Identify one area causing stress and start there.
- Prioritize Self-Care: When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to let self-care fall to the bottom of the list. But finding systems that reduce stress allows you to carve out time for yourself—whether it’s a quiet moment with coffee or a quick walk outside.
- Practice Flexibility: Life with children—especially children with special needs—rarely goes according to plan. Having systems in place helps, but it’s also important to give yourself grace when things don’t go perfectly. Flexibility is part of the process.
